First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for chance of flash floods this afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Another hot and humid day is coming up, and with all that warmth and humidity pooling ahead of a cold front, that means thunderstorms are bound to kick off in Western New York this afternoon. The main hazard of these storms will be heavy downpours that lead to flash flooding, and the main area of concern is the Finger Lakes. A lake breeze may also spark a heavy downpour along Route 104, but there is some inconsistency in the model data in regards to that. Nevertheless, wherever the heaviest rain falls there is a risk of flash flooding. Make sure to check back in before the cold front passes this afternoon for more updates. And remember: Turn around, don’t drown. Water is always deeper than it looks, so don’t try to drive through a flooded road.

Before the storms, our high temperatures will be in the upper 80s/low 90s, with heat index values in the mid 90s. Winds will pick up ahead of the cold front, with southwest gusts around 10-20 MPH. The storms themselves may bring gusts up to 35 MPH as the wind starts to come from the west/northwest.

Rain may continue into and through the evening, then tonight will be cooler and muggy with lows in the mid 60s. Tomorrow will be cooler as well with highs in the upper 70s, then the lower 80s on Wednesday. Chances for storms return Thursday.
