It’s always a sad day when a favorite neighborhood restaurant closes. You know, the one where you’ve got your unofficially claimed booth or table, and everybody knows your name, like Cheers? Yeah, that one. Maybe you’ve been going there for years, and it’s become a natural part of your routine, or maybe you just happened to pop in one day for a quick bite, only to realize it’s the best thing you’ve ever had. They serve the kind of food you can taste the love in—unpretentious and wildly delicious.

As much as we’re aware that everything has an expiration date, it doesn’t make it any easier when that fateful day comes and we’re left with the realization that this is the last time we’ll ever be able to enjoy food this good. Sure, you can try to replicate the dishes or find a similar place to eat, but it never seems to come out exactly the same. Hopefully, it’s a pain you’ll never know, but for a community of fans in East Los Angeles, they’re left grappling with the loss of an institution that has been operating for more than 50 years.

The beloved neighborhood burrito joint, La Azteca Tortillieria, announced that they’d be closing the doors of their original Cesar Chavez Boulevard location after a whopping 51 years. Known for its pillowy, soft handmade tortillas and delectable burritos, the fan-favorite Mexican restaurant has indeed earned its stripes. News of the location's closure might come as a surprise to fans familiar with their game due to the typical winding queue of people waiting to get their hands on one of the chain’s mouthwatering burritos. And it’s easy to see why.
With standout dishes such as a Chile Relleno Burrito stuffed with poblano peppers, cheese, and refried beans, among their numerous other inventive offerings, the Michelin-certified Bib Gourmand restaurant seems almost infallible. However, due to rising rent costs and new restrictions imposed by the location's current landlord, the chain announced that it’d be shutting the doors on its original location for good on July 13. While news of the location's closure is undoubtedly sad, there is a bit of a silver lining to the story.

Luckily for diners still craving that unmistakable La Azteca taste, the chain’s second location, which opened up in 2023, will now serve as their one and only flagship location—and it’s less than two miles away from the restaurant that started it all. They’re even keeping the same phone number, so if you’ve just got to have one of those delicious housemade tortillas, you can still get your fix without too many hiccups along the way.
Of course, if the OG location could make the late, famed Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Johnathan Gold’s list of top five burritos in Los Angeles, and fans were willing to wait in line for more than an hour already, it may be a good idea to try and get there sooner rather than later.
