In the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup final, Mexico secured their 10th championship title against the United States. Chris Richards scored early for the U.S. in the fourth minute, but Raúl Jiménez equalized for Mexico in the 27th, setting the stage for Mexico's victory on July 7.
Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Pochettino saw his team gain a fourth-minute lead through Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards. He headed in from Sebastian Berhalter's free-kick, with the ball bouncing down off the underside of the crossbar and just crossing the line.
But the US advantage only lasted 23 minutes as Fulham striker Raul Jimenez equalised with a first-time shot on the turn into the roof of the net from eight yards out, following Marcel Ruiz's intelligent reverse pass.
Jimenez celebrated the goal by sitting on the turf with a 'Diogo J 20' shirt in front of him as a tribute to his former Wolves team-mate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash on Thursday aged 28.
Regarding the majority Mexico crowd in Houston, the U.S. coach also pleaded for more support in the stands ahead of the World Cup that the U.S. will co-host next year with Mexico and Canada.
"I think we need the people. We need the fans. The fans have one year to realize how important are the fans in soccer," Pochettino said. "How important are the fans to be in the stadium, to stay with the team, to support, not only through Instagram, social media or through behind the team. It's to be here and translate the energy."
On the winning side in Houston, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was thrilled, and admittedly tired, after helping El Tri win its 10th Gold Cup title.
Richards put the U.S. in front when he headed Berhalter’s free kick from about 40 yards off the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down and just crossed the goal line.
Jiménez scored his 42nd international goal, third-most in Mexican history. He burst past the defense and one-timed the pass from Marcel Ruiz, beating Freese from about 10 yards on a shot that might have nicked defender Tim Ream.
