Wayne Rooney ‘secures’ new £800,000 job – seven months after leaving Plymouth

Wayne Rooney is reportedly set to receive a hefty boost to his bank account thanks to a new gig.

However, it won’t be in the dugout.

According to The Sun, Rooney has reportedly inked a two-year deal to become a regular on Match of the Day.

The report adds Rooney, who will be unveiled in his new role later in July, will earn £800,000 for his appearances on the BBC’s flagship football show.

Rooney will also be a regular for the BBC in their coverage of the 2026 World Cup.

As part of the 39-year-old’s contract, there is the option of a two-year extension.

The inclusion of the Manchester United legend as a constant presence on the show comes ahead of what will be a new-look Match of the Day line-up this season.

Hosting duties of the iconic show will be jointly shared by Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan following Gary Lineker’s retirement.

Although Lineker confirmed he would step away from the show after 26 years, he was expected to remain with the BBC to front their FA Cup and 2026 World Cup coverage.

However, Lineker departed the broadcaster earlier than anticipated amid an anti-semitism row.

As for Rooney, the pivot into a full-time media role represents a bold step given his previous managerial ambitions.

The 39-year-old has not worked in a coaching capacity since he was sacked by Plymouth Argyle last December.

Rooney had won just five games from 25 in all competitions when he was axed by the Pilgrims, who were last in the Championship and four points from safety.

The Plymouth role was Rooney’s fourth in management, with previous stints at Derby County, D.C. United and Birmingham City.

Across all four of his managerial roles, Rooney never had a win percentage of 29 per cent or more.

He was offered the chance to return to management for a fifth time with National League North outfit Macclesfield Town.

However, he turned down the approach.

Following his dismissal from Plymouth, Rooney did punditry work with Amazon Prime for their coverage of the Champions League knockout stage and laced up the boots for Soccer Aid in June.

At the event, Rooney was asked by talkSPORT about his future in management and punditry.

“Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that’s what I’m doing,” Rooney said.

“I’m enjoying it. So that’s where I’ll be.”
