In a span of less than five years, India cricket team have managed to breach two fortresses, that too in Australia and in England. In 2021, India ended Australia unbeaten streak since 1989 at The Gabba, Brisbane by beating the hosts by 3 wickets to secure a historic win. Now, after nearly 4 and a half years, the team has managed to secure its first-ever Test win at the Edgbaston, Birmingham, that too by a mammoth 336-run margin.
Was Gabba breach better than historic Edgbaston win?
There are many similarities between the two iconic wins at the Gabba and Edgbaston. For starters, on both occasions, it was a young Indian side that tasted success which was never seen before at the venues. In both games, batters rose to the occasion and young bowlers defied all odds to guarantee well-fought victories.
Gabba ka ghamand toota
So, the tale of the famous Gabba Test goes like this. India bowled out Australia for 369 runs in the 1st innings, with T Natarajan, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar getting 3 wickets each. despite contributions from the top and middle-order batters, including Thakur’s 67-run knock and barring Gill, India were bowled out for 336 runs.
It was in the 2nd innings that the young Indian bowling line-up stepped up in the absence of experienced stars like Bumrah or Shami. A five-wicket haul from Siraj and a 4-fer from Thakur saw Australia being bowled out for 294 runs.
The game looked well within the hands of India as Gill (91) and Pujara (56) stitched together a 114-run partnership after losing Rohit early. However, the game looked like it was slipping away from India’s hands, until Rishabh Pant (89*) led the side to probably the most famous heist. Eventually, India completed the run-chase with 3 wickets to spare, ending Australia’s run at the Gabba.
Edgbaston eclipsed
Even though India had etched history at the Gabba with a famous fightback, the team’s victory at Edgbaston is all the more famous. Mainly because contributions came in from all quarters of the playing XI and there was probably nothing wrong that India ever did in the Test.
A career-best 269-run knock from captain Gill, alongside handy contributions from Jaiswal (87) and Jadeja (89) ensured India finished with a mammoth 587-run total in the 1st innings. It was Siraj who starred with the ball, grabbing 6 wickets while Akash Deep finished with four to bowl out England for 407 runs.
With a hefty lead to their name, it was Gill once again who stepped up on the occasion for India, scoring 161 runs. Rahul (55), Pant (65) and Jadeja (69) helped India post 427/6 before they declared. England were all but sure to lose the game, needing 608 runs to win.
On Day 4, the hosts ended up losing three wickets at stumps for just 72 runs. Then it was Akash Deep’s turn to wreak havoc on the remainder of the England batting line-up. He finished with figures of 6/99 while the rest of the bowlers took a wicket each. India breached the Edgbaston fortress by handing England a thumping 336-run defeat, their biggest win overseas.
