Team India, under captain Shubman Gill’s leadership, did what could not be imagined to a huge extent. They beat the great English side for the first time at the iconic venue of Edgbaston. Ever since the days of Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, India has played at this venue on several occasions but could never win a match here.
Only under the great Indian skipper Kapil Dev did they have a draw at Edgbaston, but no other skipper had ever thought of winning a game here at Edgbaston.
However, before the iconic Day 5 at Edgbaston, much earlier in the press conference, an English journalist had pointed out India’s poor show here at Edgbaston, highlighting that they have never managed to win a game here.
The victorious skipper, Shubman Gill, showed some intentions of poking fun at the journalist during the post-match conference. As soon as he and all the reporters turned in for the conference, he started looking for that familiar face who had pointed out the unfortunate stats to him before the match.
"I can't see my favourite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him," said Shubman Gill, trolling that media person in the press conference.

— Ankan Kar (@AnkanKar) July 6, 2025The proud Indian skipper not only won a Test in England on his debut series as captain but also claimed it at the iconic venue of Edgbaston. Previously, India did such a wonder back in 2021, when India defeated Australia in a Border-Gavaskar Trophy test match at the Gabba.
Shubman shared a strict attitude of being unaffected by stats and has shown full trust in himself and his team's calibre in England. He has shown the courage to call for a series win from here onwards, a daring move by the young Indian Test skipper.
"I even said before the Test match that I don't really believe in history and stats. Over the last 56 years or so, we've played nine matches - different teams have come here.”
"I believe we are the best team to have come here in England, and we have the capability to beat them, to win the series from here. If we keep making the right decisions and keep fighting, I think it would be one of the series to remember," added Gill.
Captain Gill was in high praise of the Indian bowlers
Currently, the entire world, which was slamming Indian bowlers after their weak effort to fall short when defending 371 runs in the first test at Leeds, is singing praises for their efforts at Edgbaston.
The pitch at Edgbaston looked the flattest of test pitches, with nothing for the bowlers except for some occasional swing with the new ball. Once the ball becomes soft and loses its shine, it is difficult to stop the flow of runs.
The match marked three 150+ scores and a double century as well, with India creating history with 1000+ runs in a single Test match.
However, despite all of these, the Indian bowlers did a fairly good job of dismissing England for 407 in the first innings and followed it with an even better 271 all-out in the second innings of play.
India’s recruit Akash Deep became the first Indian bowler since Chetan Sharma to have claimed a 10-wicket haul here at Edgbaston. He was perfect with his accuracy, picking 4 and 6 wickets across the two innings, respectively.
"Our bowlers were magnificent. We are capable of taking 20 wickets anywhere. The consistency from both ends - Siraj, Akash, and even Prasidh - helped us win the little moments. That's what makes the difference," Gill praised his bowlers for their remarkable show.

Preparing for the Test since the IPL—Shubman Gill
When asked to shed some light on his batting performance, which will remain one of the most iconic innings played by a batter from any nation in England. Such an impact from an Indian batter in England is rare, considering the past stats.
To this, Shubman replied quickly that he had started his preparation since the IPL, where he was seen scoring a lot of runs at the top for the Gujarat Titans, a franchise he captains in the IPL. This means Gill was determined to score runs in England long before he was handed the Indian captaincy.
"I started working on some things during the last phase of the IPL," Gill said
