British GP: Norris wins from Piastri, Hulkenberg on the podium!

Lando Norris gave the home crowd exactly what they came for at Silverstone, taking a thrilling win at the 2025 British Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver inherited the lead following a penalty for teammate Oscar Piastri and held off a late charge to seal an emotional first British GP victory. But the headlines didn’t stop there – Nico Hülkenberg, after 239 Grands Prix and nearly two decades in Formula 1, finally clinched his maiden podium finish with a measured and brilliant drive to third place.

It was a race marked by unpredictable weather, safety cars, and strategic gambles, but Norris kept his cool to deliver one of the most memorable home wins in recent memory.

Early Chaos: Rain, Risk, and Safety Cars

The British summer delivered its typical mischief, with intermittent rain showers setting the tone for an unpredictable and often chaotic race.

The opening laps saw a flurry of pit stops even before racing truly began. George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Oliver Bearman all gambled by switching to slick tyres at the end of the formation lap, sensing that the drenched final sector might soon dry out.

But the risk didn’t pay off. A collision between Liam Lawson and Esteban Ocon on the first lap caused damage to Lawson's car, leading to a three-lap full course yellow.

Shortly after racing resumed, Bortoleto lost control at Turn 2 and ended up in the barriers, prompting another Virtual Safety Car and halting the flow of the race again.

Once the green flags waved on lap 7, the action kicked into high gear.

Piastri Seizes the Moment—Then Loses It

Oscar Piastri was the man on the move once the racing resumed in earnest. As conditions remained damp but manageable, he hunted down polesitter Max Verstappen with purpose.

He followed the Dutchman closely through the sweeping high-speed sectors and lined up a clinical move at Stowe, taking the lead with conviction and quickly building a gap.

Meanwhile, Verstappen began to struggle. His tyres were past their prime, and Lando Norris capitalized – first by defending from Lewis Hamilton, and then by pressuring Verstappen into a mistake at Becketts that saw the Red Bull driver slide off track. Norris moved up to second, with Piastri extending his lead up front.

As rain returned, most of the front-runners dived into the pits for a second set of intermediates. McLaren’s slower stop for Norris allowed Verstappen to jump him, but a safety car – triggered by worsening rain and later by Hadjar rear-ending Andrea Kimi Antonelli into Copse – froze the order temporarily.

But the drama was only just beginning.

    Penalty Drama Flips the Race

On the restart following the second safety car, Piastri attempted to manage the pace on the Hangar Straight. He accelerated early, then lifted abruptly—an action that caught Verstappen off guard and drew the attention of the stewards.

The decision came swiftly: a 10-second penalty for Piastri for improper safety car restart procedure!

Moments later, Verstappen compounded his misfortunes by spinning through Vale, handing second place back to Norris and falling down to 10th. That left McLaren 1-2 with Norris in hot pursuit of his teammate.

Piastri served the penalty during his final pit stop for slick tyres as the track began to dry, dropping behind Norris. Although the Australian launched a spirited pursuit and made his case on the radio –suggesting, “if you don’t think it was fair, we should swap back and just race”— the team opted to maintain the order.

Norris, spurred on by the home crowd, responded by extending his lead and ultimately sealing a commanding and emotionally charged victory at Silverstone.

    Hülkenberg's Long-Awaited Podium

While the McLarens dueled up front, Nico Hülkenberg was quietly crafting his own fairytale. The veteran Haas driver made the most of the early pit stop chaos, perfectly timing his stop for a second set of intermediates to jump several rivals and emerge in fourth place.

When Lance Stroll found himself in third courtesy of a lucky pit sequence, Hülkenberg closed the gap and made his move once DRS was enabled.

Despite pressure from Lewis Hamilton in the latter stages, the German timed his final stop for slick tyres flawlessly and managed his pace expertly to hold onto third—finally earning a podium after 239 race starts.

Verstappen Fights Back as Midfield Shines

Despite his spin and ongoing struggles with grip in the wet, Max Verstappen staged a late recovery to finish fifth. He picked off the Williams drivers, Pierre Gasly, and Stroll in a string of sharp overtakes but was still a distant 17 seconds behind Hamilton at the flag.

Gasly, Stroll, Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, and George Russell rounded out the top ten in a race where fortune fluctuated wildly and strategy proved critical.

With Norris on the top step, Piastri in second, and both cars showcasing front-running pace across changing conditions, McLaren continues its forward march.

Silverstone 2025 may well be remembered not just as Norris’ crowning home glory or Hülkenberg’s long-awaited reward – but as a pivotal day in the shifting power dynamic at the front of the F1 grid.
