Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce deny former Premier League star’s claim they gave him ‘doping products’

Fenerbahce have strenuously denied Allan Saint-Maximin’s claims that the club attempted to dope him last season.

The former Newcastle winger spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Jose Mourinho‘s side from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.

Saint-Maximin scored four goals and registered five assists in 31 games for Fenerbahce, who finished second behind Galatasaray.

Following his return to Al Ahli, the Frenchman courted huge controversy with a bombshell statement on his treatment in Turkey.

Speaking on the Zack Nani podcast, Saint-Maximin claimed club doctors tried to get him to use a banned substance.

The 28-year-old alleged that when he fell ill, Fenerbahce staff gave him ‘treatment that’s considered a doping product.’

Saint-Maximin said: “The reason Fenerbahce could not become champions was that the club was surrounded by factors other than football. At one point, they even tried to dope me. People do not know these things.

“You cannot talk about these things openly because they threaten you. If you do, they say ‘we will do this and that to you’. Sometimes you find yourself in matters that go beyond football.”

After his comments went viral, Saint-Maximim added in a post on X: “I see that things are going all over the place on X, so I’m going to clarify what I said. I was talking about those people around the club who are ready for anything.

“In my case, when I was sick, they practically gave me a treatment that’s considered a doping product. I don’t know for what purpose this team of doctors did that.”

Fenerbahce have now responded to his claims with a statement that read: “By distorting the facts regarding the medical treatment he received following a health issue, the player has attempted to mislead the public and damage the reputation of our club.

“As Fenerbahçe Sports Club, we hereby inform the public that we will exercise all our legal rights against these misleading statements and any attempt to undermine our institutional reputation.”

There was no suggestion from Saint-Maximin that Mourinho was involved in the alleged doping.

However, the pair were embroiled in a public spat earlier this year, after the Special One banished the winger from his squad.

Saint-Maximim criticised the decision to leave him out of his side’s Europa League game against Rangers, which led Mourinho to hit back that the former Newcastle maverick was unfit and overweight.

The ex-Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham manager said: “When a footballer trains well, he will become fit, can climb stairs and does not need an elevator.

“But if he doesn’t train well, if he comes in late and is overweight, he needs an elevator to go up because he gets tired very quickly on the stairs.”

Saint-Maximing denied the accusation and claimed he was tipped the scales at the same weight that he was in the Premier League.

Saint-Maximin fired back at Mourinho’s claims he was ‘overweight’ Saint-Maximin’s brother, Kurtys, also shared his opinion on social media

He captioned a post comparing his two weights on social media: “Lying gives flowers, but does not bear fruit.”

His brother, Kurtys, then waded into the disagreement, saying: “Being special means showing class when the moment calls for it, not kicking a soldier when they’re down.

“Attacking someone who is at their lowest with slander on their birthday is not classy, especially when you know there’s injustice involved. Dirty laundry should be washed in private.”

Saint-Maximin ultimately fought his way back into Mourinho’s plans before ending last season injured.

He left St James’ Park to sign for Al-Ahli on big money in the summer of 2023 after four seasons with the Magpies.

But it hasn’t worked out in the Middle East, managing just four goals in 31 appearances in his only campaign in the Saudi Pro League, although he did provide ten assists.
