Mississippi State has fielded some very interesting teams over the years. One of my favorite random college football trivia questions is: Who was the first-ever No. 1-ranked team in the College Football Playoff rankings?
The answer, of course, is Mississippi State. On Oct. 28, 2014, the Mississippi State Bulldogs under coach Dan Mullen and QB Dak Prescott were a perfect 7-0. They’d beaten teams like No. 8 LSU, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn en route to their No. 1 ranking in the first CFP rankings.
Of course, the Bulldogs slipped down the stretch that year, but it doesn’t impact the legacy Dak Prescott left behind in Starkville.
He’s been joined over the years by a few other elite quarterbacks. But only the top 4 can make our Mississippi State QB Mount Rushmore.
Here are the QB Mount Rushmore articles we’ve done so far:
Alabama Arkansas Auburn Florida Georgia Kentucky LSU Ole MissFor today, in conjunction with Mississippi State’s “Takeover Day” on the SEC Network, we’ll make our picks for the Bulldogs’ Mount Rushmore of QBs. Let’s get started with Prescott:
Dak Prescott (2012-15)
For a Mississippi State squad that only has 3 10-win seasons in its history, the 2014 season was truly special. Prescott was a big part of that. Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (deservedly) won the Heisman Trophy that year, but Prescott finished 8th and garnered 2 first-place votes.
During his 4 years in Starkville, Prescott’s teams went a combined 34-18. That’s one of the best 4-year stretches in Mississippi State football history. Some of the passing records he set during his Bulldog career stood until the Mike Leach era, when one of the quarterbacks further down this list shattered them.
When you think of the best quarterbacks ever to come through Starkville… or heck, when you think of the best players, period, to come through the Mississippi State program… you think of Prescott. His impact on the Bulldogs was immense, even if it didn’t lead to any SEC West titles or New Year’s 6 bowl victories.
Nick Fitzgerald (2015-18)
Fitzgerald was one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in SEC history. He threw for 6,207 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career, but he’s on this list because of his rushing prowess.
During his time at Mississippi State, Fitzgerald ran for 3,607 yards and 46 touchdowns. Both of those numbers broke Tim Tebow’s records for SEC QBs all time. Fitzgerald also led the Bulldogs to 3 bowl victories during his time at the helm of the offense.
Will Rogers (2020-23)
If you’re looking at the passing section of the Mississippi State record book, there’s a good chance that Will Rogers is at the top of the list for whatever stat you’re searching for. Under Mike Leach’s Air Raid system, Rogers threw the ball all over the field at an incredible rate.
With 1,301 completions from 2020 to 2023, Rogers not only led Mississippi State in completions, he’s also the SEC’s all-time leader in completed passes. He’s still second behind Aaron Murray of Georgia in all-time SEC pass yards (13,166 to 12,315) and 4th in career TD passes, with 94.
Yes, he attempted more passes (1,876, over 300 more than Drew Lock of Mizzou) than anyone in SEC history, but he deserves credit for his durability and his productivity. It might take some time for anyone to even come close to surpassing some of Rogers’ Mississippi State records.
John Bond (1980-83)
Bond gets the edge on some of the other honorable mentions listed below because of the high points of his time in Starkville. In 1980, the Bulldogs took down No. 1-ranked Alabama. The final score was 6-3 in favor of the Bulldogs and helped Mississippi State snap a 23-year losing streak against the Crimson Tide.
In 1981, Bond helped the Bulldogs win the Hall of Fame Bowl — the program’s first bowl victory in nearly a decade. Oh, and he’s the only Mississippi State QB to go 4-0 against LSU in school history.
He was a pioneer of being a dual-threat quarterback, throwing for 4,621 yards and 18 touchdowns while running for 2,280 yards and 24 scores. That was the SEC rushing record for a QB until Matt Jones of Arkansas broke it in the mid-2000s.
Honorable Mentions: Don Smith, Wayne Madkin, Dave Marler
