Egg hunt(Contributed)Today we hear from the Club’s Site Director Nathaly Hernandez:
“I graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2023 and majored in Criminology & Justice Studies. My first job after college was in social services. After a year and a half, I was ready for a change and applied at The Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah as the Site Director. The first few weeks weren’t easy. I was still trying to find a rhythm—scheduling hiccups, inconsistent attendance, and moments where it felt like the energy just wasn’t there. But slowly, with patience and persistence, things began to shift.
Smoothies(Contributed)“When I look back over the past year at the club, I feel an overwhelming mix of pride, gratitude, and growth. It’s been a journey, filled with both challenges and truly heartwarming moments. What started as a routine role quickly became a deeply personal experience that I’ll carry with me for a long time. We’ve had real wins this year—more kids attending regularly, stronger team dynamics, great outcomes at our annual fundraiser events, and a noticeable boost in confidence and camaraderie among the group. Watching these young people grow—both in skill and spirit—has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life.
Sloth in classroom safari(Contributed)“Some of the highlights in my time there include a Healthy Habits workshop during our National Programming Hour. The activity we chose was to make smoothies for participating club members. Each member had a choice of fruits, liquids, and power greens. Since that event, I noticed that the members wanted more engagement from the adults. Shortly after, I went to the drawing board, developing ways to get myself and other YDPs (Youth Development Professionals) more involved than our regular day-to-day homework support. So, I planned an egg hunt relay race. Three members and I hid all 120 colored eggs in the Grace Hudson soccer field. The energy that day was electric. The kids were engaged, the staff were in sync, and the smiles were endless. Another event that I will remember as a success was when we hosted Bonnie Cromwell and her Classroom Safari to showcase rescued animals to our club members and the students in Grace Hudson’s ASES program. It felt like everything I worked towards was coming together. During my time at the Boys & Girls Club, I focused on helping staff achieve goals, providing consistent coaching, and providing real-time feedback to enhance support quality.

It’s bittersweet to say goodbye. I’m sad to leave this incredible team and all the amazing club members I’ve had the honor to work alongside. Looking ahead, I’m excited to serve the Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah as a board member, joining our resource development team. We’ve built a strong foundation, and I can’t wait to see how we continue to grow. With this incredible group of kids, volunteers, staff, donors, board members, and supporters, I truly believe the best is yet to come.”
