Stars across the NFL will be enjoying the final few weeks of vacation ahead of a return to the practice field.
The 2025 season is quickly approaching, and nothing signifies the return of football like training camp.
High-profile rookies, like Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward and Travis Hunter, will all have a chance to impress as they look to lock down roster spots.
NFL veterans, meanwhile, will use practice to get back up to speed ahead of what could be another brutal year on their bodies.
For some, like Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs, that kind of punishment begins the moment they step into practice for Andy Reid.
Kelce, now 35, was said to be weighing up retirement earlier this year following a heartbreaking loss in Super Bowl LIX that ended hopes of a historic three-peat.
But the legendary tight end, who will go down as one of the greatest to ever play the position, will return for a 13th season as he looks to ride off into the sunset on a high.
While Kelce is already dreaming of a run to Super Bowl LX, which will be hosted at Levi’s Stadium in February 2026, he will have to get through Reid’s pre-season practice sessions first.
According to the man himself, those are pretty brutal.
Speaking to brother Jason Kelce, who also played under Reid for two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Travis revealed that Big Red’s training drills are some of the craziest he’s ever seen.
“Andy has, in my opinion, the worst drill that I’ve done in training camp,” Jason began, speaking on the New Heights podcast last July.
Travis then asked his brother if it was the ‘long drive’ drill — which Jason confirmed — and the Chiefs star started to break it down for those unfamiliar.
Kelce has faced Coach Reid’s brutal long drive practice drill plenty of timesGetty Reid also ran the drill during his time with the Eagles, where Jason Kelce playedGetty“It’s a scripted set of plays, or an unscripted set of plays, that the coaches will have for you,” the tight end, who has been tipped to struggle in 2025, explained.
“The ones will go up against the ones for about anywhere from 14 to like 18 plays.
“No matter how many yards you gain on a play — you can score a touchdown as a wide receiver, like an 80-yard touchdown — and you’re gonna have to come back and run another play with like 70 yards left.
“You find out a lot about yourself in the long drive drill.”
Jason then shared his own experiences with Coach Reid, admitted he once forced Big Red to call a timeout on the drill.
He recalled: “My first training camp, we did one, it was like a 15-play drive in Lehigh (County). It’s humid as hell, in the morning, because all the dew is on the ground. It’s hot.
Jason was a broken man after taking part in the drill during his first few training campsGetty Travis believes NFL stars ‘find out a lot about themselves’ during long drive drillsGetty“We called a screen on the like 12th play. I ran out there, whiffed the block and I’m lying on the ground. Andy had to call a timeout.
“He said, ‘Hey, you all right, young fella?’
“I don’t know that he’s ever done that before, but he had to officially call a timeout in the long drive drill.”
Jason’s story had Travis cracking up, but the Chiefs star has also shared similar brutal experiences.
Ahead of the Super Bowl in 2024, the Kansas City tight end recalled one of his first-ever camps with Coach Reid.
“He called almost every single play for me,” Kelce said of the long drive drill.
“There was a slant and then a deep ball and then we’re coming back with a deep cross and then an out route.
“I know he was challenging me. I know he wanted to make me feel it in the pit of my stomach, be miserable out on the field but still have to be accountable to my guys.
Kelce believes Reid was pushing him from the moment he entered the NFLGetty“Sure enough, I’m dragging tail, and I look over at Coach Reid and he tells me to get it going, tells me that I was moving too slowly.
“That’s what he does. I see how he challenges other guys, the young guys, nowadays. It’s fun to see how guys react to it.
“I even go up to guys and let them know, ‘Hey, this is where you can find greatness in yourself, this is where you can take the next step.'”
Now a veteran entering his 13th year, Kelce would be forgiven for taking a back seat when practice returns in a couple of weeks.
