One man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during a Fourth of July celebration in Hillsborough in the early morning hours of Saturday, with the police investigation extending into the evening.
A release from the Town of Hillsborough detailed the response and investigation, which saw officers dispatched just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 5. The party was in the 500 block of Riddle Avenue — a residential road in the Fairview neighborhood in north Hillsborough.
The town’s alert said officers “encountered a gathering of about 25 people” upon arrival, and found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was ultimately transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment, and while his condition was unknown at the time of Hillsborough’s release on Saturday, responders said the injury is not expected to be life threatening.
Hillsborough Police said while they are “pursuing all leads in this case,” a preliminary investigation indicated the shooting happening shortly after a verbal altercation between two people. Part of Saturday’s alert said investigators are working to “identify all parties involved and to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting.”
Anyone who has information regarding the party, altercation and subsequent gun violence is encouraged to contact Investigator Argie Burnette of the Hillsborough Police Department at 919-296-9522 or through the police investigators contact form.
