Carroll fought to get back as quickly as he could, fielding and base running at Chase Field before he could swing a bat. He started to take swings this past week, working up to hitting in the cages. He asked to play in an Arizona Complex League game on Thursday, getting back in live action before the team anticipated.
He then took live batting practice reps on Friday against reliever Kendall Graveman.
Carroll suffered a chip fracture in Toronto, and his return has been predicated on his pain tolerance. The club has claimed he would not risk injuring his wrist further by returning.
Manager Torey Lovullo said on Friday that he asked Carroll how much pain he felt hitting, and Carroll said not much at that point. Lovullo described a bee sting feeling Carroll experienced when he first started taking swings, but that feeling subsided as the week progressed.
Carroll owns a .914 OPS this season with 20 home runs and a league-leading nine triples. He held a 1.099 OPS through 14 games in June before going down with injury.

Diamondbacks option Tim Tawa
The Diamondbacks will keep their three left-handed outfielders in Carroll, Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas on the roster, which is how they started the season.
They recalled McCarthy when Carroll went down, and McCarthy played well in his second MLB opportunity of the season. He hit .267 with an .824 OPS in eight games, smacking two home runs.
Optioning Tawa leaves the D-backs with less infield depth for the time being.
