THERE is drama at ESPN as two of its biggest stars, Kirk Herbstreit and Elle Duncan are locked in a feud over credibility.
It all started when Herbstreit, the college football guru and College GameDay legend, called out broadcasters for showing too much fandom on air.
Herbstreit said this week on Next Man Up: “If you are a personality, like a Bill Simmons, or a Stephen A. (Smith), or a Pat McAfee … part of their schtick is kind of that.”
But he didn’t stop there, he threw shade at Duncan, SportsCenter’s flagship host, with a not-so-subtle dig.
He said: “If you watch SportsCenter and Elle Duncan is sitting there cheering for Georgia… She’s openly cheering.
“I’m not a fan of that personally. I think it hurts your credibility when that team is playing other teams fans are looking at you like… That’s different.”
Herbstreit’s comments seemed to take issue with broadcasters who show loyalty to any team on screen with Elle Duncan caught in the crossfire.
So, Duncan responded with a message sure to stir the pot.
She wrote on X: “Didn’t have this on my bingo card for today but my fandom doesn’t impact in any way what or how we talk about teams on air.
“I…JUST…BARK?? Also, whispers I’m not the only one. So why am I getting singled out?.”
Now some critics are calling out Kirk for hypocrisy given that he’s a die-hard Ohio State fan.
While some have backed Herbstreit, arguing that sports journalism should be all facts and free of personal bias.
Others say Duncan is just as guilty of showing her allegiance and the real issue is that she’s being singled out for it.
The two regularly cross paths on ESPN with Duncan hosting SportsCenter and Herbstreit making guest appearances on the show.
