World’s Largest Monkey King-Themed Park Debuts With Shanghai Legoland Opening

The Shanghai LEGOLAND Resort, the world's largest with 85 million Lego bricks, opened on July 4, 2025. It is expected to draw millions of domestic and international tourists to China and features attractions like Miniland and a culturally relevant Monkey King theme.

The Legoland resort, which opened Saturday, is the first in China. It is the largest Legoland in the world and was built with 85 million Lego bricks.

The resort was developed in conjunction with the Shanghai government by Merlin Entertainments and the LEGO Group.

Legoland Shanghai is more than just another theme park; it’s a monumental leap in bridging the global appeal of Lego with the rich cultural history of China. The park’s 75 interactive rides, shows, and attractions, including detailed Lego replicas of pandas and the Bund – Shanghai’s iconic waterfront promenade – are expected to draw millions of tourists from across the globe. With thousands of meticulously crafted Lego models scattered throughout, visitors can expect to immerse themselves in a vibrant, interactive world that celebrates both the art of Lego and Chinese culture.

The expected surge in tourists will likely boost the local economy. Following the Jinshan district's opening announcement, increased online searches and hotel bookings suggest this development will stimulate China's amusement park economy, projected to surpass 110 billion yuan by 2028. This emphasis on domestic consumption supports China's broader economic restructuring.Furthermore, the integration of cultural themes and advanced technologies in these parks caters to the evolving preferences of Chinese consumers. The success of Shanghai Disneyland and the upcoming Universal Beijing Resort exemplify this trend, highlighting the potential for themed entertainment to drive economic growth and enhance regional development. Local governments are expected to play a crucial role in fostering this growth by investing in infrastructure and streamlining regulations to support the expansion of the amusement park sector.
