Colin Cowherd has been around sports for most of his life. And, for 40 years, he’s been in the professional world of sports, covering the industry in some form.
Now, on this 4th of July holiday, Cowherd is taking time to reflect on what he has seen and the future of where things are headed. After all the time he’s spent covering the industry, Cowherd is thankful for all he’s seen and done.
“40 years later, there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing,” conceded Cowherd. “It’s remarkable what I’ve seen in 4 decades of doing this. Radio, TV or podcasting.”
He proceeded to rattle off some of the historic individuals and moments he has witnessed and helped chronicle along the way:
“I didn’t see Babe Ruth, but I got the better version of Shohei Ohtani… Caitlin Clark steps into the WNBA and literally overnight makes it a conversation… I got to see the 2 best basketball players ever, LeBron and Michael. Put them in an order you want, I got to see them both… The NCAA landscape, due to the transfer portal and NIL, players — love it or hate it — have power now. They deserve it,” said Cowherd.
While some might mistake the angle of Cowherd’s message, he said it is ultimately a thank you for the sports he loves, something that rarely leaves him disappointed in a fractured world:
“This isn’t a love letter to sports, almost a ‘thank you card’ here on this 4th of July weekend,” Cowherd explained. “It’s just a cool twist I didn’t see coming about the profession I chose. It’s become a portal, sports has, to view culture, history, conflict, identity and grace, a prism for society… One of the few things I’m rarely disappointed with in America today is sports. If that’s not a purpose, I don’t know what is.”
