This past week, CBS’s newest soap opera, Beyond the Gates, took viewers back to the beginning and re-aired the first five episodes of the groundbreaking soap opera. With a lot of viewers frustrated and confused about the situation, Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth has explained the controversial decision.
At Essence Festival of Culture panel today, Crystal Renee Hayslett explained that fans were very passionate about the CBS daytime drama, asking “where is the new episodes!?” To which, Ducksworth shared the behind-the-scenes perspective on the decision. “We really wanted for folks to catch up. Millions of y’all have tuned in which is incredible. We wanted to take a pause during this big holiday week and let people who have never seen the show get to experience day one. Just as we called upon people to experience day one on February 24th , when we launched. So we’re hoping people got to watch it for the first time. In addition, if people saw it before, got to rewatch because as with soaps, as we all know, there’s always hidden gems and subtext that you may have missed and we’re hoping that you guys got to see it again, to relive the magic or just live the magic for the first time.
But it wasn’t just fans that were frustrated over the decision, as star Karla Mosley shared, “my mom, my mom texted me, ‘call me back right now’, I said ‘mama what’s going on’ ‘why aren’t there new episodes of Beyond the Gates’ I said I don’t know, goodbye.” Laughing along, Tamara Tunie added, “I’ve got former stealers football players mothers DMing me going where is the show this week? What’s happening, what’s going on?”

CBS officially describes Beyond the Gates as a soap opera that is “set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others. “
Beyond The Gates is developed and produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios a division of Procter and Gamble. The series is the groundbreaking first hour-long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean, in association with executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, and is the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999.
Beyond The Gates airs weekdays at 2 p.m. EST on CBS and streamed daily on Paramount Plus.
