About 75 Oakland Fire Department personnel responded Friday evening to a major fire engulfing a commercial warehouse in East Oakland near the Oakland Coliseum.
The four-alarm fire billowed black smoke from the warehouse on the 5200 block of E. 8th St., said Michael Hunt, a spokesperson for the Oakland Fire Department. He said the department began responding at 4:55 p.m. on Friday. As of 5:20 p.m., 12 engines, three fire trucks and three chiefs would be involved in suppressing the blaze, Hunt said, per protocol for a four-alarm fire.
The commercial warehouse is about one mile from the Coliseum.
The fire comes on a day when the Oakland Fire Department is already on high-alert, especially in the Oakland Hills over fears that fireworks will spark blazes.
“The usual armageddon that goes on in East Oakland, just another day in paradise in an overlooked neighborhood,” said nearby resident Sonya Pelaez, 41. Pelaez watched the dark smoke from her home a few blocks away.
