COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Independence Day, an annual holiday commemorating the United States' Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776, is observed every year on July 4.
This year, the Fourth of July holiday falls on a Friday. Some central Ohio stores and restaurants will be open on Independence Day, while other businesses will operate with modified hours or be closed.

Will mail and packages be delivered on July 4?
FedExFedEx Office locations will have modified hours, with some FedEx Office locations closed. FedEx recommends customers contact their local FedEx Office location for details. Additionally, many services will not be operating on Independence Day. FedEx Custom Critical will be operating on July 4.
United States Postal ServiceThe USPS recognizes Independence Day as one of 11 federal holidays and will be closed that day. There will be no mail delivery, caller service, or Post Office Box service. All services resume on Saturday.
UPSThere will be no UPS pickup or delivery service. The UPS Store locations may be closed. UPS recommends customers check with their local store for specific hours of operation. UPS Express Critical service (now provided by MNX) is available every day.

Columbus Metropolitan Library branchesOn Thursday, July 3, all locations will close at 6 p.m., before Red, White & Boom! All locations are closed on Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
Does Columbus’s trash collection day change after the Fourth of July?
On July 4, there will be no trash collection, since Independence Day is one of Columbus’s 10 designated “no collection” holidays.
Trash Collection: For residents assigned a collection color, the color-coded calendar will advance one day after the holiday:

The next time the color-coded collection schedule will rotate will be Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, 2025.
Recycling and yard waste collection: For the weekly recycling and biweekly yard waste service, with a collection day on or after the holiday, will be delayed by one day, with Friday’s collection occurring on Saturday.
For residents not assigned a collection color: If your collection day falls on or after the holiday, your trash pickup will be delayed by one day during the week of the holiday.
Is COTA running on Independence Day?
The Central Ohio Transit Authority will operate on its holiday service schedule on July 4, Independence Day. When COTA operates Holiday Service, transit lines operate on Sunday schedules.
COTA observes Holiday/Sunday schedules on federal holidays, including New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Is parking free on Independence Day?
The City of Columbus parking services will be closed; parking will be free on July 4.
