Hamilton says Ferrari ‘can dream of a strong weekend’

Lewis Hamilton ended his opening day of running at the British Grand Prix in an upbeat mood, buoyed by his own personal progress and by Ferrari’s solid performance in both of Friday’s practice sessions at Silverstone.

After topping FP1, the seven-time world champion slotted into third place in Friday’s second practice, behind McLaren front-runner Lando Norris and Scuderia teammate Charles Leclerc.

Despite Ferrari not bringing any new upgrades to the British round, Hamilton was encouraged by the team’s pace relative to Red Bull and McLaren – both of whom introduced new parts for the weekend.

“Great to be out on track here in a Ferrari”

Hamilton, who has an unmatched 14 podiums at Silverstone and returned to the top step here last year with Mercedes, spoke positively about the feeling in the SF-25 and the support from the home crowd.

“It was a really good day. Great to see the crowd, amazing to be out on track here in a Ferrari at Silverstone,” he said.

“It’s been pretty incredible and also with Red Bull and McLaren having an upgrade and for us to still be in the mix, given that they’ve had a step today, is really positive.”

Although teammate Leclerc edged him on the timesheets in FP2, Hamilton pointed to continued improvements in his own comfort with the car setup.

“I’m progressing a lot now with the car. Much more comfortable knowing where it needs to be. I think by P2 we still weren’t where we needed to be, but we know the changes that we need to make for the next session.”

While Hamilton has yet to step onto the podium in Ferrari colours, Silverstone presents a familiar and promising opportunity. And while he’s keeping expectations grounded, the 40-year-old – a nine-time winner at Silverstone – admitted that the dream of a big result at home is very much alive.

“I definitely feel like we can dream of having a strong weekend, for sure,” Hamilton said. “Executing and putting it all together and extracting it is another thing. I’ll prepare as best I can to make sure we get the best result.”

Weather could play a pivotal role in how the rest of the weekend unfolds, and Hamilton is well aware of the uncertainty that lies ahead.

“I think tomorrow there is rain potentially coming and also on Sunday as well, we just have to try our hardest to make sure we are ready for that.”

With confidence building, conditions suiting his style, and a nation behind him, Hamilton enters Saturday’s qualifying with momentum – and a familiar glint of belief.
