Fireworks displays are expected to light up Chicago-area skies for the Fourth of July, but one of the region’s most popular shows won’t be happening on the holiday — the iconic fireworks at Navy Pier.
The famed tourist venue known for its weekly fireworks and grand displays has announced it will not hold a Fourth of July show.
“NO FIREWORKS JULY 4th,” a large banner read in front of Navy Pier this week.
On Navy Pier’s website, a similar message warned celebrators “***There will be NO Navy Pier Fireworks on July 4th, 2025***.”
That doesn’t mean there won’t be fireworks at all this week, however.
Twice weekly, Navy Pier holds free, 10-minute fireworks shows over the summer, running from May 24 to Aug. 30. Those shows take place at 9 p.m. Wednesdays, and at 10 p.m. Saturdays, organizers said. Since the third of July falls on a Thursday and the fourth falls on a Friday, the holiday won’t fall on a regularly scheduled fireworks night.
There will, however, be fireworks on July 5, according to organizers.
And Saturday, the show will be even longer, Navy Pier said, with an Independence Day celebration fireworks display presented by Navy Pier, Choose Chicago, the Chicago Sports Commission and the NASCAR Chicago Street Race. That show will take place at 10 p.m. and last 15 minutes, organizers said.
Navy Pier will remain open on July 4, with live music and performances along with other events and activities.
And Navy Pier isn’t the only popular fireworks spot to not hold a show on the holiday.

Illinois’ “largest” fireworks show, in suburban Itasca, was canceled for the Fourth of July due to “unique challenges.”
The announcement about Itasca’s Fourth of July fireworks cancellation was made in March of this year, after the village board held a meeting that cited multiple roadblocks to hosting the annual event. Those included increased crowd size, less available land space for activities, nearby construction and a 43% increase in total event budget, a memo recommending cancelation showed.
“Staff would reevaluate the viability of fireworks on July 4th in future years,” the memo said.
The celebration, which typically takes place at Hamilton Lakes Business Park, has led to sold-out hotels in the area, the memo added. For the past 10 years, Itasca’s fireworks show boasted being the “largest in Illinois” in terms of dollars spent on fireworks in a single show.

“This was an extremely difficult decision to make,” Village Administrator Carie Anne Ergo said in a statement announcing the decision. “Itasca takes great pride in hosting the biggest and best fireworks show in northern Illinois. Our first priority is always the safety and security of Itasca residents, businesses and visitors. Given the unique challenges presented this year, we cannot confidently recommend hosting fireworks in 2025.”
