Shanto, who is one of the best batters in Bangladesh cricket currently, has been in the headlines for quite some time now.
He recently stepped down as Bangladesh Test captain following the 1-0 defeat in the Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.
Shanto said that he decided to relinquish the captaincy for the betterment of the team because three different captains across formats is not the right way to go forward. Notably, Bangladesh had three different captains - Shanto in Tests, Mehidy Hasan Miraz in ODIs, and Litton Das in T20Is - across three formats.
Actually, Najmul Hossain Shanto was selected as the all-format skipper of the Bangladesh team, but he stepped down from T20I captaincy earlier this year and was recently sacked as ODI captain, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz replacing him.
Meanwhile, the selectors have decided to drop Najmul Hossain Shanto from the T20I team altogether. Shanto played just one out of the six T20I matches for Bangladesh despite being part of the squad for the previous series against UAE and Pakistan, and overall in 2024, he averaged just 18.84 in 21 T20Is.
Khaled Ahmed, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Soumya Sarkar dropped
Other than Shanto, the BCB selection committee has dropped Khaled Ahmed, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Soumya Sarkar from the T20I squad.
To replace the aforementioned axed players, the selectors have added Mohammad Naim, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Mohammad Saifuddin to the squad.
The veteran pacers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman have been added to the T20I squad after recovering from their respective injuries, and they also played the first ODI of the series against the Lankan Lions.
Naim, who has played 35 T20Is, has made his return to the squad on the back of a good performance in the 2024-25 domestic season, where he was the highest run-getter in both the BPL and NCL T20s.
Talking about the T20I series schedule, the first match is all set to be played in Pallekele on July 10. The next two matches of the series will be played in Dambulla and Colombo on July 13 and July 16.
