Paul Finebaum appeared on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ on Friday morning for a college football segment focusing on some of the sport’s biggest programs.
Finebaum was asked what would constitute a successful season for Kalen DeBoer and Alabama in 2025. After narrowly missing out on the CFP last year in DeBoer’s debut season at the helm, Finebaum says a CFP appearance is a must in Year 2.
“Everybody in the world knows what happened last year,” Finebaum said. “They missed out because of a debacle at the end of the season. He has done an amazing job recruiting. In fact, he’s done it at a level that was very close to what Nick Saban did at times. But if he doesn’t make the Playoffs, the pressure will intensify. He won’t be fired, he is still in rather good [standing] because of the recruiting. But he needs to make the CFP.”
Alabama finished just outside the CFP picture last year after a demoralizing November road loss to Oklahoma. That defeat gave the Crimson Tide 3 losses on the season, which ultimately proved to be too much overcome.
Looking ahead to 2025, Alabama is a slight favorite to make the College Football Playoff at most sports betting apps. However, the Tide will have a new starting quarterback and a schedule that once again includes Wisconsin, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma and several other SEC opponents.
Alabama will open the 2025 season against Florida State on the road in Week 1.
