Actor Lawrence Tierney’s roles often mirrored a few aspects of his real life with alcohol-related brawls and numerous arrests. When he was cast as Joe Cabot in Quentin Tarantino’sReservoir Dogs, he almost came to blows with the late Michael Madsen.
While Reservoir Dogs features a heist that spirals into absolute mayhem, things behind the scenes were no less intense. Because of Tierney’s past altercations, producers made Tarantino put a rule in place that banned him from ever consuming alcohol on set. However, Madsen, who sadly passed away on July 3, decided to break the rule, and he and costar Tim Roth took Tierney out for drinks at popular Hollywood steakhouse, Musso and Frank’s.
“He got really loaded, he walked outside of the place, onto Hollywood Boulevard and he dropped his pants in the middle of the street; all these cars were stopping, honking,” Madsen once told The After Movie Diner in an interview published in 2019.
When the Thelma & Louise star insisted that Tierney pull his pants up, he began pestering Madsen for twenty dollars, something he often did on set as a joke.
“We were like, ‘Lawrence, get out of the way! Pull up your f--king pants!’ I had to go out into the street. ‘Lawrence, what are you doing?’ I said. And he goes, ‘Gimme twenty bucks.’ I go ‘No! F--k you.’” Madsen continued. “He took this wild crazy swing at me, I backed off and he missed me by inches. I felt the breeze. God bless him, he's passed away now but he was quite a character.”
Madsen wasn’t the only person on set to clash with the Dillinger star. Tarantino once said that Tierney was “challenging to every aspect of film-making.”
"Tierney was a complete lunatic by that time - he just needed to be sedated," the Pulp Fiction director told The Guardian in 2010. "We had decided to shoot his scenes first, so my first week of directing was talking with this f--king lunatic. By the end of the week everybody on set hated Tierney – it wasn't just me. And in the last 20 minutes of the first week we had a blow out and got into a fist fight. I fired him, and the whole crew burst into applause.”
