The 264m-high wheel, set to cost $305m, will be built in time for the 2030 Fifa World Cup, which Morocco is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal.
Private investors will fund the “Rabat Observation Wheel”, reports local broadcaster Almandour.
If built, it will be 14m higher than the present holder of the biggest wheel title – the Ain Dubai on Bluewaters Island in the UAE, which itself beat the Las Vegas High Roller, which is 168m.
The Dubai wheel can carry up to 1,750 passengers in 48 cabins, each the size of a double-decker bus.
Another entrant for the top three is an innovatively designed 180m wheel, proposed for Seoul last year (see further reading).
