Mark Hamill Makes Another Bold Statement About Star Wars

Actor Mark Hamill is making some clarifying comments about the Star Wars sequels.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Hamill commented on his past criticism of his beloved character, Luke Skywalker's actions in the sequel trilogy, specifically the 2017 film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson, during June 2025 interview on Bullseye with Jesse Thorn.

Hamill stated that he wanted to clear up rumors that he dislikes Johnson. He asserted that he believes "Johnson is one of the most gifted directors [he has] ever worked with."

"He's amiable, he's fun on set, he's smart, he made a great movie. I think the standoff between Kylo Ren — Adam Driver — and I at the end is so well-staged. I love Knives Out and Brick. He's one of my favorite directors," said Hamill during the interview.

He said, however, that he was unhappy with how Luke was presented as an angry and isolated individual in the Star Wars sequels. According to Hamill, he told Johnson he disliked how Luke was being handled.

"The fact that I went public with my dissatisfaction with the motivation for Luke becoming a suicidal hermit might have colored things in a way that, maybe I should have kept that to myself. But I kept saying to Rian, 'This would just make Luke double down even —' and he said, 'Well, your class at the Jedi Academy were wiped out,'" said Hamill.

Hamill then said he disagreed with Johnson's reasoning, as Luke has always been a symbol of hope, no matter what.

"I said, 'Rian, I saw entire planets wiped out! If anything, Luke doubles down and hardens his resolve in the face of adversity.' So that’s all," said Hamill.

The actor also said he had to create a different backstory for Luke in order to justify his behavior in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He said he decided that Luke was in love with a woman who committed suicide after losing a child, causing him to withdraw away from society.

Hamill began portraying Luke in the 1977 film, Star Wars: A New Hope. In a June 2025 interview with ComicBook, Hamill said he doesn't think he'll reprise the role again.

"We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters," said Hamill to the publication.
