NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Visitors to Niagara Falls this summer will notice a new four-foot buffer lining the observation deck. This temporary measure was implemented after two people died by suicide within a week.
While some visitors find the change understandable, not everyone agrees with the necessity of the barriers.
“I do like the park police on that corner and this corner. I think that’s efficient, but the barriers I don’t think are necessary,” a visitor said.
The park is collaborating with experts to determine long-term solutions, but the future plans remain unclear.
Park Police told News10NBC’s Buffalo affiliate, WGRZ, that they’ve responded to over 30 suicides on the American side of the falls throughout the last decade. In December of 2024, NYS Park Police Capt. Chris Rola told WGRZ he didn’t think the falls needed any extra physical barriers.
