Heinrich Klaasen orders ICC to scrap bilateral ODIs after quitting international cricket

Heinrich Klaasen recently appeared in an exclusive interview with Cricbuzz. Amid several questions and opinions, he was asked about his views on the current cricket calendar and its evolution in the coming years.

The former South African wicket-keeper answered it, indicating that bilateral one-day matches are no longer needed in the international calendar. He has rather urged teams to play more Test matches.

"I think the only change that I will make is probably take [bilateral] one-day cricket away from international cricket. Make it more Test matches for teams that don't play a lot of Test matches. Play more T20 cricket," said the former Protea batter.

He also cited that playing more T20 games is essential, as that is what cricket fans want to witness in today's time. Though Klaasen suggested keeping the One Day ICC World Cup, he said playing some preparatory games ahead of the marquee tournament would be more than enough for any side.

He also urged that every board should look after their players so that they focus on international assignments and do not chase the Global T20 leagues for money.

"The all-format players can't play leagues, and they can't play all the formats for the international team; they will just burn out," Heinrich Klaasen suggested in his interview.

Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from international cricket as he decided to prioritize T20 leagues. The 33-year-old has decided to step down after playing the last international game against New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Heinrich Klaasen has played 7 years in international cricket, where he played in 4 Test matches, 60 ODI matches, and 58 T20I matches for South Africa. The batter has 2141 runs in ODIs and 1000 runs in T20Is and was part of South Africa's squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup, 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, and 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
