Wait, What Does ‘NPC’ Mean?

You probably hear a lot of different terms and slang words you’re unfamiliar with on the daily thanks to how fast things travel on the internet. But if your friends, partner or your kids are chronically online, you might hear more than the usual person might. And if someone you’re close to is a big video game player, then you’ve probably heard the term “NPC” floating around. But what does “NPC” mean? Is it bad?First, don’t worry, it’s nothing problematic. Sure, there’s a newer NPC meaning in slang that isn’t very nice, but it’s not something to write home about. In fact, if you’ve ever played a role-playing game, even if just for a little while, odds are you’ve interacted with an NPC. You just didn’t know it. So, what does NPC stand for, and what does it mean in slang and on TikTok? Read on to find out more about the term.Related: Wait, What Does ‘FAFO’ Mean?

"NPC" is a term that originally comes from video gaming—typically a popular type of character in many of their worlds. NPC means non-playable character or non-player character. Essentially, an NPC is any character in a game that you are currently not playing as. Related: Huh? Here’s What ‘DW’ Means in a Text

    What Is an NPC?

    I’m an NPC, of course…

NPCs can be people in the background or guides that you need to interact with to finish a goal or task; there are endless possibilities as to who constitutes an NPC. The first examples that come to mind, for me, are Sims not in your household in The Sims 4 (or any of the The Sims games). I was also a big fan of Spyro the Dragon as a kid, and the NPCs in that game helped by giving instructions for the next part of your adventure. Many other role-playing games have NPCs such as Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas and Red Dead Redemption 2.There are great NPCs out there who are well-written and operate fine, but then there are ones who are really slow or mindlessly walk around like nothing is going on upstairs. Which, of course, there isn’t because they’re designed to only do a handful of things. When they’re not doing what they’re programmed to do, they might just stand in one place, softly swaying until called into action.

    Examples of NPCs

Residents in Animal Crossing, such as Isabelle, Tom Nook and BrewsterTownies in The Sims 4, such as Bob Pancakes, Bella Goth and the LandgraabsNavi in The Legend of ZeldaMerchant in Resident Evil 4

With that said, though, did you think that NPC would just keep its original meaning forever? No, of course not. Even though it’s something that came about at the turn of the century because of the rise in video games, NPC already has a slang meaning. NPC can also be a pejorative name you call a real-life person who you think is irrelevant, boring or who doesn’t seem to have many thoughts, as Urban Dictionary shared. Again, an NPC in video games can be “stupid” or only serve one purpose. So, an NPC in your real life is someone who is "just there" (from your perspective).

    NPC Meaning on TikTok

Cosplaying and skits are very popular on TikTok, so you can imagine how many times people either transform into an NPC or make fun of video game NPCs, like TikTok user @loczniki did in a 2024 video. They poke fun at the stereotypical robotic nature of many NPCs. So the NPC meaning on TikTok isn't different, it's just shown in different ways (usually to make a meme or skit). So, next time you see a bumbling character in a video game that's only there to help move the story along, you'll know what to call them. And if your teenager calls you an NPC, you can always prove you're not boring by coming up with some *exciting* new chores for them.Up Next:
