Hardware Startup Nothing Unveils Its Most Cutting-Edge Smartphone Yet

In a significant development within the competitive smartphone market, hardware startup Nothing has unveiled its latest flagship device, the Phone (3), priced at £799 (Rs 79,999). This launch marks Nothing's strategic entry into the high-end segment, positioning itself alongside established giants such as Apple and Samsung . The Phone (3) boasts impressive specifications including a translucent back design, a 6.67-inch OLED display, and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor. Additionally, it introduces the innovative Glyph Matrix feature aimed at enhancing user interaction.

The Nothing Phone 3 still features Nothing’s distinctive design, including a partially transparent case and some fancy lights, but it is a more mature version of Nothing’s prior mobile devices. Gone is the full-blown light-up “Glyph Interface” in favor of what Nothing calls the “Glyph Matrix,” a small micro-LED screen in the top right corner of the phone’s jam-packed rear panel. Nothing says that like the older Glyph Interface, the new Glyph Matrix delivers must-know information to users to help reduce the need to look at the phone’s primary 6.67-inch AMOLED display.

It’s mixed messaging, but in Nothing’s defense, you couldn’t accuse it of making that mistake elsewhere. The Phone 3, we’re told, is Nothing’s “first true flagship phone,” a point the company is keen to hammer home: flagship chip, flagship camera, flagship price. In fact, it’s so flagship that the company is even springing for a true US launch — its first since 2023’s Phone 2 — which Pei says only makes sense for Nothing’s “premium” phones.

At $799, the Phone 3 is priced to match the iPhone 16, Galaxy S25, and Pixel 9, particularly as Nothing positions itself firmly outside its midrange origins. Pei says the company feels ready “to compete with products in that price level.” Preorders open on July 4th, with general sale starting on July 15th on Nothing’s online store and Amazon in the US. Nothing says the phone is fully compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T, with “more limited 5G support” on Verizon.

Instead of having the lights on the back flash in patterns to indicate when certain contacts are calling, the Phone 3’s new tiny screen can display monochromatic images instead. At first, these will be preset shapes, but eventually, you’ll be able to customize your own animation (or static dot-matrix image — it’s unclear) for each of your contacts. Ahead of launch, Nothing shared a web portal that lets people take photos and turn them into Glyph patterns, but it’s like a very, very small Gameboy camera (but worse). The one I took kinda looks like my head? I guess? At least there’s a contrast, and gives a glimpse of what users might be able to show on the matrix screen

The vision of Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, emphasizes creativity and user-centric design as core components of their strategy. By targeting creatives with unique features like "Essential Space," Pei aims to differentiate his products from those of larger competitors who often prioritize functionality over innovation . This approach reflects a broader industry trend where startups leverage distinctive aesthetics and targeted marketing to carve out niches in saturated markets.

Since its inception, Nothing has shown remarkable growth; its annual revenue doubled in 2024 to over $500 million with cumulative sales surpassing $1 billion . Such financial success underscores consumer interest in alternative offerings that prioritize both style and substance. As technology continues to evolve rapidly within an increasingly competitive landscape, Nothing's commitment to fostering creativity may very well resonate with users seeking more than just technical specifications in their devices.
