Deere Run, a 7,257-yard par-71 parkland course, has hosted this tournament since 2000, which tends to turn into a birdiefest – no more so than last season when Davis Thompson claimed a first PGA Tour victory with a tournament-record 28-under-par total.

This is a straightforward course and a hot putter is almost essential.

Talented Thorbjornsen Poised For First Win

Griffin is respected after a superb run of form, but this looks a huge chance for Michael Thorbjornsen to claim a first PGA Tour title at a venue where he knows he has what it takes to contend.

Thorbjornsen finished 17th at Deere Run as an amateur in 2023, then he returned last season to finish second behind runaway winner Thompson on only his third start since turning professional.

A powerhouse who putts well, the 23-year-old has battled injuries over the last 12 months, but he has been excellent in recent appearances, finishing second at the Corales Puntacana Championship, fourth in the Zurich Classic when partnering Karl Vilips, and fourth at the Rocket Classic last weekend.

Yu Has All The Tools To Tame Deere Run

Like Thorbjornsen, Taiwan’s Kevin Yu is course proven, finishing sixth on his John Deere Classic debut two years ago, then finishing 20th last season when his driving wasn’t up to its usual standard.

Yu is typically one of the strongest drivers on the Tour – he ranks sixth in strokes-gained off-the-tee, and third among those in this week’s field – and he returns in excellent form having finished fourth at Myrtle Beach and third in Canada in his last five starts.

While the putter has held him back in the past, Yu rolled his rock well in both starts on the Deere Run greens, and he’s gained strokes on the field with the flat stick in four of his last five tournaments. 

Don’t Rule Out Deadly Putter Echavarria

This could be a week to side with Colombian Nico Echavarria, who ranks fifth on the PGA Tour for strokes-gained putting.

A runner-up at the Sony Open at the start of the season, Echavarria has failed to shine on his two starts at Deere Run, but he is a player who can go on long runs of poor results, and that was the case prior to his appearances in both 2023 and 2024.

This time around, Echavarria returns on the back of a confidence-boosting sixth-place finish at the Rocket Classic last week.
