Ketel Marte’s game-tying 9th-inning blast not enough as Diamondbacks fall to Giants

Ketel Marte’s game-tying home run in the ninth inning was not enough as the Diamondbacks fell to the Giants in extra innings, 6-5.

On a 1-0 count, Marte crushed a hanging slider off Giants closer Camilo Doval 410-feet to the right field seats, which evened the score at five.

It was Marte’s 18th home run of the year, and it came on the day he was announced as the starting second baseman in the All-Star Game and the leading vote-getter in the National League in Phase 2 of voting.

Last season, Marte had nine home runs in the ninth inning, but his two-run shot on Wednesday was his first in the ninth inning this season.

Before Marte’s home run, the Diamondbacks struggled to put runs on the board, leaving nine on base, while going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Merrill Kelly gave up a home run to Mike Yastrzemski on the second pitch of the game, and after Wilmer Flores walked, a Jung Hoo Lee triple scored Flores to give the Giants an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning.

But Kelly settled in and turned things around, giving the Diamondbacks a quality start. He went 6.0 innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs, while walking three and striking out three.
