4Reel Fishing: Dock talk

Good day, my fellow anglers!

CLEAR LAKE: Well, you know it’s summer time when the word “clear” is questionable when you are talking about our top rated bass fishing lake over the hill. The algae is in full bloom right now. Did you know that Clear Lake at one time was clear. Hence its name.

Researching the algae history of Clear Lake will show that the current algae problem is man made. Before 1925, Clear Lake was truly clear. Road building and wetlands reclamation projects (Rodman’s Slough) in the 1920s and 1930s increased the sedimentation rates. The increased sediment killed off most of the natural root growing plants. The blue/green algae scum has been a perennial problem ever since. (Thanks to Gregory A. Giusti, University of California Cooperative Extension, March 2009.)

Probably, one of the best ramps right now is the County Park out of Kelseyville. There is  not as much algae there. This past week the fishin’ has picked up some. Early on the morning hours, frog and top-water bite has been decent. The bass are aggressive and hungry after spawning. Midmorning, fish the docks and rock piles with plastics on a drop shot rig. Once it gets hot, the bass bite pretty much shuts down.

BLUE LAKES: It has been several weeks now since the Upper Blue Lake has received a trout plant. Even so, there still are some limits being caught. The anglers out on the water trolling have been doing the best. Try pulling an action disk at 20 feet, trailing it with a fly, live or plastic worm. The bass fishing has picked up as of late. Like Clear Lake, the early morning hours will produce some bass off a top water lure. After the sun comes up, fish the shady spots next to docks or brush using a Senko or Brushhog.

East Fork of the RUSSIAN RIVER: The East Fork of the Russian River, near the Potter Valley bridge, has not received a trout in some weeks. There are still a few trout to be caught. You’ll just have to work to get a bite. Panther-Martins, Roostertails, Super-dupers, small castmasters, salmon eggs, power bait, power eggs, worms/night crawlers, you name it, are all working. The kids are out of school for the summer. Now is a great time to take a kid with you fishing.

LAKE SONOMA: The Yorty Creek and Cherry Creek areas have been producing many bass, both smallmouth and largemouth. Most of them are smallish, one to two pounds.  But, here and there you’ll pick up a 3- to 4-pounder. If things aren’t working for you, change it up. Try a different lure color and size. The bass are there, once dialed in you will have fun catching them.

LAKE PILLSBURY: Well, there are only two local lakes in our area that are pretty much “full-ish” – Lake Pillsbury and Blue Lakes. Both also have great water quality too. Teresa and I have not had the time to take the trip to our lake up on the mountain for a while. We are just busy-busy at the pool store right now. (gotta make hay while the sun shines,  right?) But, I have received several great fishing reports.

For you trout anglers, trolling is the ticket. “Use your electronics to find the trout in the deep water. Then, the key is to set your down rigging at 35 feet.

Don’t forget about the bass fishin’. The bass bite is also going strong too. Find the bait fish, you find the bass. Drop-shottin’ and slow draggin’ a sweet-beaver or brush-hog will get you hooked up. Oak Flat and the Log Jam would be great places to try.

LAKE MENDOCINO: The bass fishin’ on our hometown lake has continued to be very good. Like all of our bass producing lakes, the early morning hours is the best time to get out on the water. The top water bite is starting at dawn to about 8:30 am. Then move to 15-20 feet of water and drop-shot or slow drag a baby brushhog. Some of my friends have also been hooking into some nice bass fishing a swim bait, moving it along the bottom.

Be safe, be kind – watch out for the other guy!
