Karun Nair wastes India’s unclaimed No. 3 Test spot audition after Edgbaston failure

Team India made desperate attempts to resolve their struggling lower order by adding Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar for the second Test in Birmingham. This, however, has had a cobra effect, with India’s top-order somewhat failing on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test. While KL Rahul was chopped on early, Karun Nair also found his way back to pavilion after getting promoted to number three.

Karun Nair continues to flop for India

Shubman Gill benched Sai Sudharsan, who failed at one down on his Test debut in Leeds. Hence, India included all-rounders to elongate the batting lineup, moving Karun Nair to three. The Karnataka-born batter looked in great touch, hammering five boundaries. He survived a close LBW shout, where Nair didn’t attempt a shot.

After that, England’s bowlers made a simple plan – go short to Nair, who didn’t look comfortable off that particular length. Ben Stokes aimed at his body before Brydon Carse came in and dented India just before lunch on Day 1. A short delivery, that continued to soar up on Nair, found its way to the second slip, ending Nair’s stay at 31, which is his highest Test score after the iconic triple century in 2016.

    Nair needs runs, ASAP

Nair made his international comeback after almost eight years, having featured in 2017. Insane toil in domestic cricket and a plethora of runs in all formats got rewarded in the form of selection for the England tour. However, he has struggled to make runs in the first three innings, scoring 51 runs at an average of 17.00. He batted at number six in the previous Test in Leeds, where he bottled two great chances to bat.

Now, in Birmingham, while the pitch wasn’t an absolute belter in the first session, Nair should’ve hung around for more. It would sulk, considering Nair was looking pristine when hitting his shots. India dropped Sai Sudharsan after his forgettable debut, giving us an indication that they can be lethal in team selection. Hence, there’s not much time left for Nair to make his mark again. Cricket has given him one more chance, and he needs to make the most out of it ASAP.
