ALAMEDA — A substitute janitor at Ruby Bridge Elementary School’s campus was arrested Tuesday morning, after authorities suspect he was drunk on the job and made a sexual comment to a student, according to the Alameda Police Department.
The man was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of public intoxication and annoying or molesting a victim under the age of 18, records show. He also was fired after the incident, which happened around 8:50 a.m. during a summer program at the elementary school, according to a letter sent out by Alameda Unified School District Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi.
The student was attending the summer program when she heard the man say something she thought was “sexual in nature,” according to Alameda police. Afterward, she reported it to her parents, prompting police to respond to the school, located at 351 Jack London Ave. on the island’s west end.
“I want to assure all our families that student safety is our top priority,” Scuderi wrote in his letter, stressing that all employees undergo background checks before being hired. “We take any concerns that arise despite that pre-employment screening extremely seriously.”
The man remained held Tuesday afternoon on $7,500 bail, jail records show.
