Despite recent slide, SF Giants pick up Melvin’s contract option for 2026

PHOENIX — Even as the Giants struggle through a cold spell, president of baseball operations Buster Posey gave manager Bob Melvin his vote of confidence on Tuesday afternoon.

The Giants announced before their game in Arizona against the Diamondbacks that they had exercised Melvin’s 2026 contract option and will bring him back next season.

“Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we’re really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball,” Posey said in a statement. “His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he’s the right person to continue guiding this team forward.”

The decision to pick up Melvin’s 2026 comes as the team has lost six of their last seven games, as well as 11 of their last 15.

Melvin, 63, has a record of 125-122 in his two seasons as San Francisco’s manager. Overall, Melvin has a career record of 1,642-1,547.

Last September, former president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said that his and Melvin’s contracts were only guaranteed through 2025. Zaidi was replaced the next month by Posey, who has remade the Giants’ roster, while Melvin has stayed on under Posey’s direction. The Giants are 45-40 this year, 1.5 games out of the National League’s third wild card spot.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group,” Melvin said in a statement. “I believe in what we’re building here, and I appreciate the confidence that the Giants ownership group, Greg (Johnson), Buster, Larry (Baer), Zack (Minasian) and the rest of the Giants’ organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”
