MS Dhoni in legal battle for Captain Cool trademark

The legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni has taken a major step in securing legal rights to one of the most iconic nicknames in Indian cricket history. The phrase ‘Captain Cool,’ which is famously associated with the legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni, has officially been accepted and published by the Trademark Registry of India.

Now, the former Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is just one step away from legally owning the moniker ‘Captain Cool’ that has defined his composed and fearless leadership style for more than a decade.

The trademark was accepted on June 16, 2025, and will be fully granted if no objections are raised by any third party within the 120-day constitutional period. Dhoni had filed the application back in June 2023 under categories linked to sports coaching, training services, and facilities.

However, he initially faced an obstacle when the registry pointed out that a company named Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited had already registered the phrase ‘Captain Cool.’

In his response, the former Indian captain, who won all the ICC trophies as captain, filed a rectification petition, challenging the registration of Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited and accusing the company of trying to profit from his well-established public image.

Trademark Registry of India accepts MS Dhoni’s application

Dhoni had said in his application, “This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual.”

After at least four hearings, the Trademark Registry of India accepted Dhoni’s application, paving the way for him to own exclusive rights to the title that fans across the world have long associated with the legendary cricketer. With this development, Dhoni is now close to officially owning ‘Captain Cool.’

Notably, Dhoni, one of India's most successful captains, led India to titles in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. He played 90 Tests, scoring 4,876 runs with six centuries, and 350 ODIs, amassing 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57, including 10 centuries.

MS Dhoni's IPL 2026 return remains a mystery

The legendary cricketer scored 1,617 runs in 98 T20Is. He also holds the record for most stumpings in international cricket (195). Dhoni was last seen in action in the IPL 2025, where he stepped in as captain of the Chennai Super Kings after Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured mid-season.

Despite his return, it was a tough year for CSK, as they finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in 16 seasons. He will celebrate his 44th birthday on July 7 but hasn’t yet confirmed whether he’ll be back for another IPL season.

His future in the tournament remains open. Last month, Dhoni received one of cricket’s highest honors by being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.

He was honored to celebrate his incredible contributions to the game and place him among the greatest cricketers in history. Dhoni said on the recognition, “To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”
