PHOENIX — The Giants and Diamondbacks both stumbled into their four-game set against one another at Chase Field. San Francisco had just lost two of three to the Chicago White Sox; Arizona had just been swept by the Miami Marlins — the same Miami Marlins who just swept the Giants at Oracle Park.
By the end of Monday night, one of these struggling teams would have another win of their docket. That team wore red, black and teal, not orange and black.
The Giants began the first of four in the desert with a 4-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday night at Chase Field. They’ve lost six of their last seven 11 of their last 15 games, scoring just seven runs over the first four games of their 10-game road trip.
Logan Webb was charged with the loss, allowing one homer and three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with the help of a rare defensive miscue from catcher Patrick Bailey.
Alek Thomas set the table with an opposite-field double on a weak pop fly that dropped between left fielder Heliot Ramos and third baseman Christian Koss. Jose Herrera followed Thomas by laying down a sacrifice bunt. Bailey scrambled to the ball, grabbed it with his barehand, spun and fired a one-hopper that first baseman Dominic Smith couldn’t handle. The ball bounced off Smith’s chest and rolled away, allowing Thomas to score from third.
Daniel Johnson nearly tied the game in the top of the sixth with a 106.1 mph line drive that cleared the right-field fence but veered just foul. In the bottom of the same frame, the Diamondbacks doubled their lead to 2-0 when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. sent a hanging sweeper over the left-field fence for a solo home run.
In the top of the seventh, San Francisco finally had its response.
Dominic Smith put himself into scoring position with a one-out hustle double, then Willy Adames followed up with an infield single to put runners on first and second. After Jung Hoo Lee flew out, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo swapped out starter Ryne Nelson for right-handed releiver Juan Morillo to face Tyler Fitzgerald.
Entering that plate appearance, Fitzgerald hadn’t driven in multiple runs in a single game since April 14, the night he almost hit for the cycle against the Philadelphia Phillies. That streak ended with one swing.
Fitzgerald drove a 98.9 mph sinker from Morillo into the right-center field gap. Thomas, the center fielder, gave chase and laid out. His glove made contact with the ball but he couldn’t quite haul it in. Smith scored easily; Adames did too. Fitzgerald’s stint with Triple-A Sacramento was originally supposed to last several weeks, but here he was tying the game up at two apiece.
The good vibes only lasted so long. In the top of the seventh, Arizona took the lead right back. Geraldo Perdomo flipped a bloop single into left field to drive in Thomas and the Diamondbacks led 3-2.
Then, things got odd in the top of the eighth. With one out, Koss sent a deep drive to left-center field. Left fielder Tim Tawa gave chase and leapt for the ball. As Tawa reached for the ball, a fan caught the ball by reaching over the fence and into the field of play.
Koss, justifiably confused, wasn’t sure whether to circle the bases, go back to second base or otherwise. The umpires convened and ruled fan interference, meaning Koss was out. San Francisco then challenged the call of fan interference, and after a lengthy review, the call was overturned and Koss was awarded a double. Brett Wisely then pinch-ran for Koss, giving the Giants a speedy runner on second with one out.
The Giants wasted the opportunity. Rafael Devers struck out swinging, Heliot Ramos struck out looking on a fastball out of the zone and the rally was over. Prior to the ninth inning, manager Bob Melvin was ejected from the ballgame.
