BAZETTA — When people visit the Trumbull County Fair next week, they will be able to walk through the new 4-H building on the west side of the fairgrounds.
A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Monday with fair board members and county commissioners. Kierstin Holmes, senior fair board director / secretary, said the previous building was getting old and needed to be replaced.
She said former and present county commissioners made the project possible using American Rescue Plan funds. The new building has a meeting room, an upstairs viewing room for judges and announcers, a registration room and a pavilion for outdoor meetings and eating. It also has restrooms with showers.
“People will be able to come here and enjoy the shows,” Holmes said.
She said a soft opening was held this past weekend for a horse show.
“Everyone has said how much they loved it. We have received all positive reviews,’’ Holmes said.
The building will be used for all junior fair participants for 4-H meetings, fundraising and other events.
“The building will be able to be used throughout the year,’’ she said, because heating will be added shortly for the winter months.
“We want to thank all the past and present commissioners for helping us with this project. We could not have done it without them and their staff. It’s a great addition to our fairgrounds,’’ she said.
Commissioners provided $850,000 in ARP funds for the project, and $685,000 was used for the building. Holmes said the remaining funds will be used for other projects at the fairgrounds, such as a new sound system, new swine pens and a new pavilion at the bicentennial area.
Barry Brown, fair board president, said he was appreciative to past and present commissioners and grant writers who made the project possible.
“I know we waited three years to get this, but this is fantastic,’’ Brown said.
Vendrick Construction Inc. of Brookfield constructed the 2,500-square foot building.
Commissioner Denny Malloy said it was a long time coming for the building.
“All the work done at the fairgrounds will really put this fair on the map.’’ Malloy said.
Officials said they were glad to be able to help the 4-H program.
Commissioner Rick Hernandez said he drove around the fairgrounds and said “it is in tip top shape.”
Makayla Olsen of Cortland with Touch of Class 4-H said the horse club members are excited the building was done.
“It will be great to use this during the fair. There is a new meeting room we can use when we need to come inside because of the rain,” she said.
Holmes said the fair, which runs July 8 to 13, will have two demolition derbies at the grandstand, musical performances on the stages, Jungle Terry and Ohio Department of Natural Resources animal shows, and a Jurassic Park animatronic dinosaur show, clowns, RC racing course and a petting zoo.
“There are a lot of buildings that have been redone this year,” Holmes said.
