Temperatures are projected to be below normal this Fourth of July weekend, with highs in the 70s and 80s across Southern California’s coastal and valley regions.
Coastal areas in Orange County will see highs in the low to mid 70s, paired with a cool sea breeze during the afternoons. Those planning to visit the beach this Independence Day can expect temperatures of 74 degrees in Newport Beach and 71 in San Clemente.
Further inland, temperatures will be roughly 10 degrees warmer but still tolerable, with highs in the low 80s. The warmest cities include Yorba Linda and Anaheim at 82 degrees.
“The weather is going to be beautiful,” remarked National Weather Service meteorologist Philip Gonsalves.
Similarly, the Inland Empire could see highs in the mid to upper 80s, increasing a degree or so after Friday, National Weather Service meteorologist Stefanie Sullivan said. San Bernardino, Lake Elsinore and Hemet will see the hottest temperatures on Friday the Fourth, at 92 degrees.
An air quality alert issued by the South Coast AQMD due to increased fine particle pollution from smoke will remain in place until Tuesday evening, July 1. The alert covers valley areas in Riverside and San Bernardino county, including Corona, Ontario and Moreno Valley due to nearby wildfires as firefighters continue battling several brush fires, which began over the weekend and Monday across the Inland Empire.
“It’s one of our busiest times of the year,” said Cal Fire San Bernardino Unit spokesperson Chloe Castillo.
The hot, “super dry” climate combined with illegal fireworks, “could be a recipe for disaster,” she warned. Starting Tuesday morning, Castillo said the agency has beefed up staffing in preparation for the holiday weekend.
In Los Angeles county, high temperatures could be up to 8 degrees cooler than usual throughout the holiday weekend. Coastal areas will see highs in the 60s and 70s. Areas further from the coast will be notably warmer, around the 80s and 90s in valley areas.
