ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A community engagement session took place in Rochester Monday for a proposed historic byway. The “Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway” aims to document the journey of Tubman and other freedom seekers through New York state.
The proposed 550-mile byway would pass through 22 counties and offer self-guided driving tours.
“The goal is to not only highlight this American history, because that’s exactly what it is, but also for people to understand the importance of their own local communities in uncovering and unearthing a lot of history that they might not even be aware of, and then the actual intrinsic value of that history,” said Saladin Allah, Descendants council chair of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
Rochester is known for its rich abolitionist history. The Flower City was home to multiple Underground Railroad stops and the famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
