‘Sorely disappointed’ – Goldberg denied retirement match request at venue WWE hasn’t visited in 31 years

Goldberg has been granted his wish to have one more match – but WWE wouldn’t let him call the shots on where it will take place.

Goldberg will face Gunther in his retirement bout at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL in July at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Goldberg will say goodbye to wrestling for good in JulyWWE

It’s a hometown farewell for the former Atlanta Falcons Defensive Tackle as he battles the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

However, the Hall of Famer has already claimed that he wanted his last match to take place in Israel.

Goldberg has been outspoken about his Jewish heritage in his career and has refused to wrestle on the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.

Unfortunately for the ex-WCW champion, the ongoing conflict in Israel ruled out any possibility of staging an event in the country.

“You guys know that I’ll do anything for my faith,” he told The Claw Pod with Ross & Marshall Von Erich in May.

“Truth be told, my dream was to have my retirement match in Israel, but quite obviously, because of the surroundings right now, over the past five years, it just hasn’t been the right place to do it.

“I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that I was sorely disappointed that I couldn’t do something in Israel.

“But hey, man, retired doesn’t mean dead by any stretch.”

WWE programming currently airs on Netflix in Israel, but the company has not staged an event in the country since 1994.

A house show on December 4, at the Heichel Hasport in Tel Aviv, saw Razor Ramon defeat Jeff Jarrett, with Lex Luger also in action.

Goldberg has been open about his faithWWE

That was the last of eight WWE shows in Israel from October 1993 to December 1994, which featured Vince McMahon‘s top stars.

The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Randy Savage, and Diesel all competed across Haifa, Jerusalem, Holon, and Tel Aviv.

During this run, Goldberg was still in pursuit of an NFL dream, having not transitioned to professional wrestling until the summer of 1997.

WWE planned to return to Israel in 2006, but a SmackDown event in Tel Aviv was cancelled following the outbreak of the Lebanon War.

Goldberg was already in the midst of his first retirement from wrestling two years prior, so he wouldn’t have featured regardless.

Now, the 58-year-old will definitively hang up his boots, with Atlanta ready to host what WWE is billing as Goldberg’s last stand.

And with the match looming, The Undertaker has made it clear what shouldn’t be part of it — Goldberg’s spear.

The signature move has been part of his identity since his WCW debut in 1997, usually followed by a Jackhammer and a three-count.

Speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, Undertaker praised Bron Breakker’s vicious spear on IShowSpeed at the Royal Rumble, and said it was so good that the move should now be exclusive to him.

“You bent him in half so bad,” the Deadman commented.

“I honestly, right then on the spear, I said, they should take the spear away from everybody else.

“I know there’s probably some people that probably take exception to that, but I was like, man, that should be his solely.”
