Team India has perhaps understood that it made a mistake by playing just one spinner in Headingley. The question is, who plays with Jadeja? India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate didn’t specify that. But he did bring up that Washington Sundar into the conversation unprompted.
“Yes, there is a very strong chance of playing two spinners in the next game, but it’s just which two we play. All three spinners are bowling very nicely; Washington Sundar is batting very nicely. The wicket has 11-12 mm grass; it’s very patchy and quite dry underneath, but there’s also rain forecast for Wednesday, so… but I’m pretty sure two spinners will play,” he told reporters in Birmingham on Monday.
Arshdeep Singh to make Test debut?
Arshdeep Singh could also make his debut. If two spinners are to play, especially Washington, you need a left-arm pacer to create the rough for him. Although ten Doeschate stated that Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection, he didn’t confirm his participation. In this case, Arshdeep could prove to be a worthy replacement.
“There is (a chance for Arshdeep Singh to get a game). Again, going back to the spin combination, if we are going to go with two spinners, Arshdeep provides a bit more control. You have a left-armer bowling over the wicket (to create a rough for spinners). We feel they are all there and thereabouts, eligible for selection. He is definitely in the selection mix for the next Test,” ten Doeschate added.
