Shane Lowry makes exciting comment ahead of The Open at Portrush

Shane Lowry has shared a positive message as he prepares to return to Royal Portrush at the 2025 Open Championship.

The Irishman landed his maiden major title at the prestigious Northern Irish venue back in 2019, as he delivered a masterclass to finish six strokes ahead of runner-up Tommy Fleetwood.

Lowry will be among the home favourites as the British major heads back to Portrush in July for the first time since his iconic triumph.

This is despite the 38-year-old cutting a frustrated figure on the course of late, with his form taking a hit in recent months.

Since missing out on glory at the Truist Championship in May, where he finished tied-for-second, Lowry has found himself far from his best, missing the cut at both the PGA Championship and US Open.

But he now looks to have put recent disappointment behind him, after returning to the site of his greatest career moment to date.

Taking to X, Lowry revealed he had made the trip to Northern Ireland to take a look at Portrush, with just over two weeks to go until the final major of the year, which takes place between 17-20 July.

The PGA Tour star shared two pictures of himself, one of which showed him smiling on the course, with his arms aloft.

Alongside this, he wrote: “Little trip to Portrush to check it out before The Open.

“Course is looking great and everything ready for a big week.”

Also included in the post was a picture of Lowry in front of a mural dedicated to his 2019 Open victory at Portrush.

The piece of art was unveiled in the County Antrim town last year, and depicts him lifting the Claret Jug following his triumph.

While aware of the mural, Friday was the first time Lowry had visited it in person.

He also shared a clip of him taking in the eye-catching mural.

He uploaded a video of him driving past the painting, while he can be heard cheering: “Waheeeeeey” before stopping for a photo.

Derry-based art collective Peaball were responsible for the stunning artwork, with it no surprise they were keen to commemorate a standout moment in Irish sporting history.

Lowry’s stunning win six years ago saw him record a stunning final score of 269, 15-under par, leaving his closest rivals of Fleetwood and Tony Finau six and eight shots behind respectively.

Despite his dominant display on home soil, the Irish star has been unable to add to to his major collection in the years since.

His best results in recent years have come at the 2022 Masters, finishing tied-for-third in Augusta behind champion Scottie Scheffler, and the 2021 PGA Championship, where came tied-for-fourth.

But his 2025 form has left a lot to be desired, with Lowry most recently missing just his second cut in his past seven US Open starts earlier this month, with a 17-over-par score.

The challenging campaign at Oakmont also saw him involved a bizarre rule violation, as he was penalised for picking up his ball on the green without marking it.

Lowry will face stiff competition as he targets a second major title at Portrush, with homeland hero Rory McIlroy bidding to land his first Open title since 2014.

Also competing is last year’s champion Xander Schauffele, as well as PGA Championship winner Scheffler and US Open victor JJ Spaun.
