Bhubaneswar: Babilata Behera, former Supply Inspector of Kaniha Block, District Angul, and currently posted as Supply Inspector at the Office of the Chief Supply Officer (CSO), Baripada, District Mayurbhanj, was convicted today by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul, in a bribery case.
She has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment and fined for her involvement in corrupt practices.
The Odisha Vigilance had chargesheeted Behera under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. She was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 43,000 from a sub-wholesale dealer of kerosene oil. The bribe was taken to sign the utilization certificate for kerosene oil distribution and to issue a release order in favor of the complainant. Following her conviction, Behera was taken into jail custody to serve her sentence.
The Odisha Vigilance announced that it will now approach the competent authority to seek her dismissal from service due to the conviction.
