Gautam Gambhir’s journey as the head coach of the India National Cricket Team is all set to complete one year on July 9, but the honeymoon phase seems long over.
After replacing Rahul Dravid following India’s triumphant ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, expectations were sky-high, especially with Gautam Gambhir fresh off guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title.
However, Gambhir met the expectations in the white-ball cricket, winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year and winning almost every series, but results in the Test cricket have painted a troubling picture.

Under Gambhir’s leadership, India has played 11 Test matches but has managed to win just three—two against a struggling Bangladesh side and one over Australia in Perth.
Now, in the all-important five-match Test series against England, India is already 1–0 down after a disappointing five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley, putting Gambhir under immense pressure to deliver in the red-ball format of the game.
It’s premature to take a call on Gautam Gambhir: BCCI
Despite the underwhelming numbers, Gambhir isn’t facing any immediate threat. It is being said that the Indian head coach has the full backing of the selectors and BCCI for managing the Test team in this transition phase.
The source pointed out that Australia and England have both faced tough patches during transition phases, so they called for patience during this challenging time.
A BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport: “At the moment, Gambhir is doing a good job with a young team. In transition, you do not always get the intended results. Australia and England both struggled during their transitions.
"So, it’s premature to take a call on Gambhir. We still have four Test matches in England, and we are hopeful that we can turn things around. Beyond that, we will see. He (Gambhir) has the full trust of the board.”

Gautam Gambhir takes a dig at Kapil Sharma on his show
Meanwhile, the latest promo of The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 3 has been making rounds on social media. The upcoming episode is set to be a fun-filled cricket special, featuring Gautam Gambhir alongside Rishabh Pant, Abhishek Sharma, and Yuzvendra Chahal.
Host Kapil Sharma promises plenty of laughs as he welcomes the cricketers to his couch. In the promo, Kapil jokingly asks about the mood inside the Indian dressing room, saying, “How is the dressing room scene? Is Gautam bhai serious with you all?”
Rishabh Pant said with a laugh, “When there are ups and downs in a match, we all are tense. There’s nothing big in that.” But Gambhir fires back with a hilarious response: “It’s like when your show doesn’t do well, how are you going to react?”
To which a mock-upset Kapil replied by saying, “Saari baatein mere pe daalni hai?” Later, Gambhir opened up about his intense persona on the field. He noted, “People often say I fight on the field. But whom am I fighting for? Itʼs never for myself—itʼs for my country.”
