The sun was beaming brightly down Saturday afternoon at the Greeley Stampede’s Hotrods and Horsepower car show, and that sunshine had the majority of paint jobs gleaming.

“It’s a community event,” said Stampede vendor coordinator Charity Ray. “It brings the community together.”
This was the first time Ray was helping oversee the car show, along with Julie Reinert, Stampede office manager.
There were 62 cars on display at the show, which has been a staple at the Stampede in recent years. And over those years, the show has forged friendships and stories.
“Honestly, for me and the cars that I own, it’s the stories. I love listening to people’s stories,” Scott Christie said.
Christie had his 1969 Plymouth GTX on display, which marked his first time entering the Hotrods and Horsepower car show. He said he has had his GTX for eight years, but he has only entered it in shows in the past four years.

He put in hours of labor into it for five to six years.
He estimated he put in 1,400 hours of labor into the car during those years. He said the first rule of undertaking a project like his GTX is to have patience. The other rule is not to worry if you’re going to get your money back that you put into it, he said. And when it’s all said and done, it’s all worth it.
“You gotta love cars,” he said.
Chuck Zieman brought out his 1966 Mustang Coupe that he has owned for nearly 13 years. Zieman, a Mustang guy, found his Coupe in storage at the Greeley-Weld County Airport. The man overseeing the storage needed to make room, so Zieman made him an offer, and he drove off with it soon after.
Like Christie, Zieman’s Coupe wasn’t in pristine condition when he bought it. After countless hours of meticulously putting it together, the Coupe has taken first place at various car shows over the years. It is also a Mustang Club of America gold award recipient, the highest honor within the club.

However, the awards are secondary for Zieman when it comes to car shows. It’s the stories and friendships he’s made over the years that shine brighter than any trophy ever could.
