Law enforcement in Chicago’s northern suburbs recently arrested more than two dozen people as the result of a two-day human trafficking sting operation.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group targeted suspects who attempted to purchase sex through online classified advertisements, which is a tactic traffickers regularly use to market victims of human trafficking, sheriff’s officials said. As part of the investigation, undercover detectives posed as people offering sex for money and arrested the suspects after they arrived at a Gurnee-area hotel.

The sheriff’s department, in a statement, said traffickers often force victims into prostitution through physical violence, manipulation, fraud or coercion.
“These operations are about protecting victims and holding sex buyers accountable,” Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in the news release. “Suppressing the demand is a critical piece of dismantling the human trafficking pipeline. If there is no buyer, there is no market.”
