Saturday (June 28) was an optional practice day for Team India in Birmingham. Having held their first training session for the second Test against England yesterday, every member of the squad was present. However, today several players decided to rest.
Gill, Pant & Jaiswal skip optional practice
According to the Times of India, captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal weren’t present during India’s practice. Gill and Pant in particular had spent a long period batting in the nets. Not to forget, they were in supreme touch in Headingley.
Sai Sudharsan, who couldn’t make the most of his debut, was the first batter in the nets. All things suggest that the southpaw will continue at number three, despite two soft dismissals against England captain Ben Stokes.
Bumrah bowls in the nets
India’s pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj hadn’t bowled yesterday. They have primarily focused on fielding and fitness drills. Siraj was the only one who batted under the supervision of assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate. But on Saturday, all of them bowled. Considering how poorly India’s tail performed with the bat, Bumrah and Siraj worked on their batting as well.

— Sahil Malhotra (@Sahil_Malhotra1) June 28, 2025We still don’t know whether Bumrah will play in the India vs England 2nd Test. But his bowling with just 4 days left before the game is a good sign that the management is still considering him. Already 0-1 down, if India decides to rest the pacer in Birmingham, playing him in the third Test might be futile.
