Shreyas Iyer given brutal ‘no chance’ verdict regarding India Test comeback

The 30-year-old star India National Cricket Team batsman Shreyas Iyer has been handed a brutal 'no chance' verdict regarding his comeback to the Test team.

Shreyas Iyer has been told by the former opening batsman Aakash Chopra that the Indian Test batting unit is completely stacked and there is no place for him in the team at the moment.

Iyer has been having a good time in his cricket career recently, and the Mumbai lad is at the peak of his powers.

After being left out of the BCCI central contracts list last year, he put in hard yards and established himself as one of the top players in Indian cricket to eventually get back his contract.

Recently, he guided the biggest underperformers in IPL history - Punjab Kings - to the summit clash and showcased a tremendous batting performance in the competition.

Before that, he set the stage on fire in domestic cricket and consistently scored runs for Mumbai across all three formats of the game.

However, he was not selected in the Indian Test team for the England tour, with the BCCI selection committee including Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair as new faces in the side following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

There was no chance of Shreyas Iyer's number coming now - Aakash Chopra

Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra justified the non-selection of Shreyas Iyer in the Test team for the England tour.

He mentioned that the Indian batting unit is doing a solid job, and the likes of Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan are also waiting in the wings, which leaves no room for the addition of Shreyas Iyer to the setup.

"No, Sir. There is no issue in batting in any case, and his number will not come now. I mean it won't come immediately. The number can come any time, but it wasn't supposed to come now because the others haven't gotten an opportunity," Aakash Chopra said.

"If you think about it, Karun Nair has played just now. You are unable to give Sarfaraz Khan an opportunity. Dhruv Jurel is sitting outside. So when the players who are already there aren't getting full opportunities, how will Shreyas' number come? So there was no chance of Shreyas Iyer's number coming now," he added.

He will have to wait a little more - Aakash Chopra

The cricket-turned-commentator further acknowledged that Shreyas Iyer has been in red-hot form, but stated that he will have to wait for a longer period of time to get back to the Test team.

"Yes, I know, since he had a very good first-class season, had a good IPL, made the team win, and all of that, it's beautiful, white-ball cricket, but Test cricket, especially away from home, his time will come, but I think it won't come now. He will have to wait a little more," he said.

Iyer has played 14 Test matches in his career and has scored 811 runs at an average of 36.86, with one ton and five fifties. Overall, in first-class cricket, Iyer has played 81 matches and scored 6363 runs at an average of 48.57, with 15 tons and 33 fifties.
